It was a cold night in the valley

The first time fall let the winter show

Silver moon in that southwest horizon

Laying shadows down in the valley below

In a cabin out on a mountain

Two would marry, their love would grow

And their families all would gather

They come to celebrate the young and the old

Children played with the flowers

And gave them to Grandpa the greatest of all

He sat in his chair looking over

Three generations of family he saw

The band played on through the evening

The bride and the groom had a dance of their own

While Grandpa sat there smiling

So proud of how his family had grown

[Chorus]

It was his last dance of a life he'd known

Last page of a book he wrote

His last words were "I love you so"

It was his last dance, just in time to go

They danced to the sound of the music

And Grandpa walked to the maiden of the bride

While the band played a pretty little bird song

He spun her around and danced out that night

Then he walked out to his cabin

He turned out the lights and gave a prayer to the Lord

He said "thank you for all these children"

Closed his eyes and let his spirit soar

[Chorus]

THE LAST DANCE
